Programmable Photonic Network Interfaces

Built around the FastNICs (Fast Network Interface Card) program, our work on photonic network interfaces focuses on addressing the mismatch between computing and networking performance through the development, implementation, integration, and validation of novel optical network interface cards.

Current Projects:

  • FastNICs (Fast Network Interface Card)

    • Our role in the FastNICs program is the development of experimental systems, designed to speed up applications such as the distributed training of machine learning classifiers by 100x, as well as to serve as practical demonstrations of large-scale integrated photonic interconnects with practical compute nodes. Our work has demonstrated or involved 2.5D integration and advanced packaging techniques, integrated photonic switching, leading-edge thermal control, and close co-integration of custom photonic and electronic integrated circuits.
